To Austin!

Map from St. Peters, MO to Austin, Tx

To the left is the driving map from St. Peters, MO to Austin, Tx with a stop in Texarkana, AR.  Total estimated travel time is 14 hours 20 mins.

Our expectation is to do most of that trip on Saturday, March 22nd, stopping in Texarkana.  This drive should be fairly relaxed as we’ll be taking off before noon and make stops along the way.  Most likely we’ll stop around Memphis and around Little Rock.

My wife and I have never visited Little Rock, so we hope to stop and grab a few pictures there.

We plan to stay in Austin through till Saturday morning.  Plans may change as weather conditions change, and/or other things develop during our stay.

Do feel free to invite us to breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, photography, or whatever.  We are going to staying with a friend, and spending some evenings with her of course.

Some recommendations from friends:

Bob Bullock History Museum

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Zilker Park Rose Garden

Salt Lick BBQ

Alamo Draft House

Botanical gardens

Stretch of South Congress between the river and E. Oltorf

Guero’s Taco Bar (shrimp fajitas FTW)

Mars Bar

If you have recommendations for eateries, hangouts, favorite tourist attraction or whatever, please leave a comment here, DM me on Twitter @tojosan, or email me tojosa/  If you want a postcard, email me or DM with note saying POSTCARD and an address.

Thanks so much for the recommendations so far.  Can’t wait to be in Austin, see the sites, visit with friends, take some pictures and eat at some interesting places.

Wow, have a nice trip! 🙂 I’m unfamiliar with that route, so can’t offer any advice. Let me know if you ever head to the West coast, though!

Guero’s is on the aforementioned stretch of S. Congress known as SoCo. Definitely worth hanging around in that area.

Alamo Draft House is a fun place — a movie theater featuring mostly indie films and classics but set up w/ conference-style tables on every row — and a full-service restaurant. Have a beer and pizza while you watch a show!

If you like steaks, Hoffbrau on 6th St. is an Austin tradition. No menus. Server will tell you what steaks they have and your sides are pretty limited — salad and fries. But for a perfectly cooked steak that hangs off the platter, this is the place to go.

While you’re here, you should really drive west of town and poke around the Hill Country a bit. We’ll try to keep the bluebonnets blooming for you.

    See you soon!

Jealous! I have heard for years that Austin’s a great city.

Okay. We decided to go through Oklahoma after all. So tonight we are just south of OK City! Tomorrow’s drive should be quicker for sure. We are looking at getting a good night’s rest and a fresh start in the AM.
